📌 About IP Pinning
IP pinning allows you to connect to the same specific server IP every time you use a particular location. This feature is perfect for users who need consistent connections, better performance, or want to maintain the same external IP address across sessions.
Why Pin an IP Address?

Pinned IP vs Dynamic IP
Feature | Pinned IP | Dynamic IP |
---|---|---|
Server Selection | Same server every time | Best available server |
Performance | Consistent (your chosen server) | Variable (load balanced) |
IP Address | Always the same | Changes each connection |
Best For | Consistency needs | General browsing |
Availability | If server is down, fails | Automatic failover |
Privacy | Less anonymous | More anonymous |
Step-by-Step Setup
Connect to Your Preferred Location
Open the TorGuard Android app and tap "Enable" to connect to your preferred location:

💡 Pro Tip
Test different servers in your location first to find the fastest one before pinning.
Pin the Connected IP
Once connected, you'll see a pin icon on the right side of the connected IP in the "Remote IP" column. Tap it to pin the IP:

⚠️ Important
Make sure you're happy with this server's performance before pinning it.
IP Successfully Pinned
The IP is now pinned. You'll see a cross (X) icon to the left of the IP address. Tap it if you want to remove the pin and return to dynamic IPs:

Note: Every time you connect to this location (Los Angeles in this example), you'll automatically connect to your pinned IP.
Managing Multiple Pinned IPs
🔄 Location-Specific Pinning
- Each location can have its own pinned IP
- Pin different IPs for different cities
- Switch between locations keeps their pins
- Remove pins individually per location
Example Setup:
- 📍 New York: Pinned for gaming (lowest ping)
- 📍 Los Angeles: Pinned for streaming (best bandwidth)
- 📍 Miami: Dynamic (general browsing)
Performance Optimization
⚡ Finding the Best IP to Pin
1. Test Multiple Servers
- Connect to your desired location
- Note the speed and latency
- Disconnect and reconnect several times
- Test different times of day
- Pin the consistently best performer
2. Speed Test Each Connection
- Use fast.com for quick tests
- Check ping to your target service
- Test during your typical usage hours
3. Monitor Performance
- If pinned IP becomes slow, try a new one
- Server loads change over time
- Re-evaluate monthly
Dedicated IP vs Pinned IP
🎯 Understanding the Difference
Feature | Pinned IP | Dedicated IP |
---|---|---|
IP Exclusivity | Shared with other users | Yours alone |
Cost | Free feature | Additional subscription |
Availability | Any server | Specific locations |
Best For | Consistency | Exclusive access needs |
Need a Dedicated IP? Check available locations
Troubleshooting
Can't Connect to Pinned IP
- Server may be offline
- Remove pin temporarily
- Try reconnecting
- Contact support if persistent
Pin Button Not Visible
- Ensure you're connected first
- Update to latest app version
- Check screen orientation
- Try different location
Performance Issues
- Pinned server may be overloaded
- Try pinning different IP
- Test at different times
- Consider closer location
Best Practices
💡 IP Pinning Best Practices
- Test Before Pinning: Always verify performance first
- Document Your Pins: Note which IPs you've pinned and why
- Regular Reviews: Re-evaluate pinned IPs monthly
- Have Backups: Know alternative servers if yours fails
- Location Matters: Pin closest servers for best latency
- Time Zone Consideration: Pin servers in less busy time zones
Frequently Asked Questions
While servers are generally reliable, they can go offline for maintenance or updates. If your pinned IP is unavailable, you'll need to remove the pin temporarily to connect to another server.
Yes! Each location can have its own pinned IP. The app remembers your pin for each city/country separately.
No. A pinned IP is still shared with other users but ensures you connect to the same server. A dedicated IP is exclusively yours and requires a separate subscription.
Using the same IP repeatedly can make you slightly less anonymous compared to dynamic IPs. However, you're still protected by TorGuard's no-logs policy and encryption.
